Ace trainer-reinsman Aiden De Campo is never quite sure how his smart four-year-old Frisky Styx will perform.
“He picks and chooses when he wants to run,” said De Campo after driving the New Zealand-bred gelding to a splendid victory in the 2130m Retravision Lowest Price Guarantee Pace at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
“He is a horse with a lot of ability who works like a nice horse on the track at home, and at times comes to the races and doesn’t do his best. But he did tonight when he got a perfect run.”
The perfect run came when Deni Roberts sent the $3.50 second favourite Waverider forward from sixth position 750m from home with a fast three-wide move. This was followed by Frisky Styx.
Waverider ran past the pacemaker Vanderbilt ($8) 320m from home, but he was unable to hold the strong-finishing Frisky Styx, who gained the ascendancy 60m from the post and won by 2m from the $3.40 favourite Mikis Beach, who surged home from eighth at the bell.
Frisky Styx, who was excellent value as a $19.80 chance on the tote, has raced 24 times for nine wins, four placings and $64,334.
