“He’s a very small horse but he is very brave and very tough,” said Emily Suvaljko after driving Mister Macedon to victory in the $23,000 Womencan Teal Pace at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
“The more you serve it up to him , the more he seems to enjoy it. He thrives it when a horse comes outside of him.
“When My Ultimate Chevron came at us three wide in the home straight it pushed Mister Macedon.”
Mister Macedon, trained by Nathan Turvey, was the $3.80 favourite from out wide at barrier seven. He settled down in seventh position before Suvaljko urged him forward, three wide, after 400m to move to the breeze, with $4.50 chance Regal Cheval, who had made an unsuccessful bid for the early lead, then going forward to wrest the lead from Chaco Eagle ($6.50).
“I thought Mister Macedon could win in the breeze, and I thought putting pressure on Regal Cheval would cause that horse to give way a bit,” said Suvaljko. “When I saw that the second quarter was run in 28.9sec. I thought I had overdone it a bit. But his toughness enabled him to win.” He scored by a head from the fast-finishing My Ultimate Chevron ($10), with Regal Cheval finish a length farther back in third place.
